I think this is the longest I've gone without sleeping.

[She holds a hand to her forehead, but she sounds awake and alert. A small origami book is on the desk in front of her. Covering her floor are several hundred origami paper cranes.]

I don't like this event so much. [She finishes the final fold on a crane, puts it aside, and smiles furtively.] Five hundred and seventeen.

[Locked to Lucifer||Hackable]
I almost forgot to lock this. Hardly any of my friends know you're here... I'll be up on the roof until dawn. [She quickly adds the next part.] If you want to help me practice.

So more practice, then. [She kicks imaginary dirt at her feet.] I tried making myself less sleepy during the event, and now I'm so awake I feel like I don't have to sleep for days.

More practice. Or you could simply make a new world. That little endeavor would give you all the practice you could possibly want. [A very thin smile passes briefly over his face.] You needn't sleep ever again. That is one of the double-edged side-effects of what we are.

[Now she gives him a confused look, her eyes wide. Did he really just say that? Was he joking?]

["What we are." The words dig themselves into her brain. Maybe she'd been in denial for a while, but she still isn't ready to face up to the fact that she won't ever be normal again. If she ever was.]
Mm. [She turns away, looks at the forest in the distance.]

[He lets the silence settle over them, content to simply be in the moment for a time. When he speaks again, it's with the same neutral nonchalance as before.]

You'll do just fine. Uncertainty, I suspect, is part and parcel to the whole affair. And the first time is always a wash. But in the end, you'll do rather well.

[She thinks about that for a moment, before pointing at the forest.] I bet I can make that tree regrow all its leaves. [The tree she's talking about is big, and is mostly barren.]

[He studies it for a moment before nodding.] Yes, I daresay that you can. Go ahead. Show me.

[The desire to wave her hand is strong, although she knows she doesn't actually have to. She resists, sending out power without making a show of it.]

[Although, nothing really happens.]
Mm. [She smiles abit sheepishly.] It... looks healthier?

Elaine. [He turns to look at her, one eyebrow quirked in inquiry.] Are you trying to make it regrow its leaves? Or are you making it do so? To try to already accept the possibility of failure. To use the power, you must know that what you will will be so. Accept no other outcome but what you wish. Force the world to be precisely what it is you wish it to be.

That's a lot easier said than done. [But he probably knew that already. Or maybe, it was easy for him. She truns toward the tree again.]

[After several moments of concentration, green, red, and orange leaves start sprouting from the tree, until the whole thing is an explosion of color. The mass of foliage grows until it is slight larger than any of its neighbors.]

[But then it shrinks again back to a barren husk. Elaine grits her teeth, her voice tense.]
Something's resisting.

[It's considerably difficult for him to do what she is attempting. Were he in his father's universe, were he at the height of his power, it would have been easy. More than easy. Instinctive. But he is neither there nor in the fullness of his strength, and so he can only make an educated guess.]

Your uncertainties? Or this place? One can be overcome. One may require a bit more effort. [His eyes turn toward the tree.] Yet you did affect it. That means it can be done. You have seen proof of it. You know. Try again. See what happens.

Like muscle, it will only come easier with use.

["I'm tired," are the words at the edge of her lips, but she knows he wouldn't stand for that. So she sets herself to try again, ignoring the migraine that she's instinctively forcing on herself.]

[The tree opens up slowly, like a flower blooming, eventually settling on a few sparse growths of leaves here and there.]
Something's still resisting. [She puts a hand to her head, massaging her temple.] I don't think it's me. But I went for a bit of permanence this time. [The tree definitely has a sad number of leaves, but at least they're not shrinking away.]

[He runs a critical gaze over the tree, weighing what it is now against what it was before. It's a start. And the circumstances now are not what they once were. She will get better, he knows. The first steps are always the shakiest.]

Learning to wield the power is substantially more instinctive when there is a vacuum waiting to be filled. Within the parameters of a fully defined universe, there will often be resistance. Especially if the universe in question is not yours.

It is a good start.
