[Elaine had set her device to record like a video camera, but in her excitement hadn't realized that she had set it to transmit to the whole Mansion. Her room is dark, at first.]

[There's a slow exhalation of breath that can be heard from Elaine, next to the camera, as the room slowly starts to fill with green light. The source of the light is a small glowing orb that grows brighter each second, but stops before the room is properly lit.]

I did it. Happy, Lucifer? [There's a touch of bitterness in her voice. She stands up from where she was sitting, reaching out her hand toward the orb. Two tendrils of light reach out like waves of mist, touching her hand. The orb, which really seems to be made of nothing but smoke, starts spinning faster.]

Mhairi, meet Wonderland. Wonderland, meet Mhairi. [The orb is still accelerating, until Elaine's hair whips around her face from the wind. Then everything falls into equilibrium, the orb still spinning, but the world around it no longer reacting.]

I've never been this tired before.

Yes. I arrived yesterday. I can't say I'm very happy about it.

Anyone here you already know? I think that'd probably help. Other than that... well, the place grows on you, eventually. Just not the events.

No one that I'm aware of. I've looked through this network archive a bit and don't recognize anyone so far. But I haven't gone all that far back in it.

Events?

Events. Every once in a while, the Mansion changes based on the memories of one of the people here. If that memory is good, the Mansion often does some good things. If it's bad, then the whole place changes accordingly. In either case, those are called events.

And this happens often enough to present an annoyance at least, I take it.

How worried should I be?

Once every week or two.

Well... Just wait for your first event. It's really difficult to describe. But there's nothing much we can do about it, so don't be too worried. Just be prepared to fight, or to run, or hide.

[Though his voice doesn't reveal much emotion, he looks a bit amused.] Those are things I'm used to, at least.

You'll get lots more practice here. [Though it isn't clear if she's joking or not.]

At least I won't become too complacent, then. [He offers a wry smile.]

You've been here awhile, I guess.

Long enough that I want to go home. Not that long, all things considered. A year in November, I think.

That's still a long time to be away from home. [A slight pause, then a quiet laugh.] I feel like I should be offering my condolences but ah...that seems a bit....

Out of place? [She smiles.] Don't worry about it. Like I said, it sort of grows on you.

I guess being frustrated by it constantly would be a waste of time and energy.

You can't really help it all the time, but you can try to avoid it, at least.

[He nods and smiles a bit.] At least you've found ways to pass the time.

Weirdest hobby I've ever head of, but... yeah.

It's better than some I could think of.
